Spirulina is a microscopic algae in the shape of a perfect spiral coil. This first photosynthetic life form, our immortal ancestor, was designed by nature 3.5 billion years ago. Blue-green algae like spirulina produced the oxygen in our atmosphere allowing all higher life forms to evolve. It has renewed itself with billions of years of successful evolutionary wisdom coded in its DNA. For more information see the Spirulina Page.
2) Whats the difference between Chlorella and Spirulina?
Spirulina and blue-green algae are not in the same physical category as Chlorella. Chlorella, as well as complex plants, belong to a biological group called "eukaryotes." Spirulina and blue-green algae belong to the biological group called "prokaryotes." They are in the same physical category as bacteria -- that is why you will often find these products referred to as "cyanobacteria." Spirulina also has a higher absorbtion rate than Chlorella, as well as larger quantities of beta carotene. Phycocyanine is also found only in Spirulina. 6) Is it okay to take it with other health food products and medicines?
Spirulina is a food product, so you may take it with other health foods or medicines. Itfs probably easier to understand if you think of it as a green or yellow vegetable that has been dried. There is, however, a medicine used for the treatment of arteriosclerosis and angina called Coumadin. Taken by people who have problems with their heart or blood vessels, it is a blood-thinning medicine that makes it difficult for the blood to clot. Spirulina 100% contains vitamin K and one of the effects of Vitamin K is to promote the thickening of the blood, so there is a possibility that it may inhibit the effectiveness of Coumadin. In Spirulina 100%, there are about 40-80 g of Vitamin K per 100 grams, which is quite a considerable amount. Therefore, we recommend that people who are taking medication like Coumadin consult with their doctor or pharmacist before taking Spirulina.
7) Is it okay to give to children?
Yes, it is. Spirulina is a food, so it is suitable for all people, from babies to the elderly. Some people mix the Spirulina granules with their babies' food and give it to them that way.
